I was convinced I could jump back into the workforce two weeks after Goob was born. Needless to say, that didn’t happen. As much as I mentally wanted to return to work, she wasn’t having any of it and my body certainly wasn’t ready. I starting looking up ways to make some extra money to take some stress off the husband. Amazon’s MTurk seemed like the best fit. I can work when I want, for how long I want, and make a few extra hundred dollars a month.

TL;DR: Amazon MTurk isn’t a scam. You can work from home and make some money, but it does take mild dedication to see a decent profit.

What is MTurk? It’s a service from Amazon where you can complete simple tasks–such as surveys and data entry–in exchange for small payment. For example, tonight I completed a survey about my college major and hobbies in exchange for $3. Some tasks take longer than others, so it’s important to pick your battles to make sure you earn enough for your time. The official site is located here.

How much can I make? If you’re wanting to end the day making $100-$200, this site isn’t for you. Although there are some who make that much, it takes a lot of dedication and work. Having kids at home, I can’t spend that much time on it, so your mileage may very.

In the last 2 months, I've made around $600 with very little effort.

How do I get paid? Earnings are transferred either to an Amazon gift card or your Amazon Payments Account. From there, you can easily transfer the money to your checking account. It usually only takes one business day for it to appear in my checking account. Some requesters will pay you immediately, but they have up to 30 days.

Do I need any special equipment? HITS (that’s what the tasks you perform are called) are best done on a computer. Most surveys can be completed on a phone or tablet, but you’ll go faster with a good old keyboard and mouse. Some HITS will specify that they require a computer, while others may want you to use a mobile device.
